Game Review
Melbourne attacked constantly throughout the second term, but their wasteful shooting for goal produced only 1.7. At the long break, they trailed Carlton by 5 points, and the breeze was freshening. Aware of the danger, Melbourne stacked their backline in the third term and bottled the game up. Carlton managed 1.3 with the wind, while one of Melbourne's few sallies forward produced a crucial gaol - keeping the margin to eight points in favour of the Blues at the last change.
Carlton employed similar tactics to Melbourne in the final quarter, dropping extra defenders back and doing everything possible to stifle play. We were still in front by 6 points with only a few minutes left, when the Fuchsias launched a brilliant passage of play that started at half-back and ended with a mark in the teeth of goal.
That effort levelled the scores, and when the bell sounded across the ground to signal full time, the Blues had been forced into their first-ever VFL draw. While this outcome always produces a somewhat hollow feeling, we had at least ensured that we would avoid the wooden spoon.
At the end of this round Carlton were in 7th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 66.5.
Carlton's captain at the being of the season Jimmy Aitken (and Carlton's first League captain) had transferred to Melbourne during the season (and was the first League player to transfer during the season) played in the Melbourne side in this draw, while Melbourne's captain Ned Sutton was also an ex-Carlton VFA player.
