Game Review

This game was played four days after the first game at Princes Park against Collingwood, when Carlton had played creditably in leading all day and only losing by four points when Collingwood kicked two late goals. After that huge effort, the intensity against Fitzroy in this game was unfortunately lacking and the result was never in doubt after quarter time. The Argus reported; "Practically, their success in the opening quarter was Carlton's share of the conflict, for their score hardly moved afterwards, and one of the bad fits of attacking the goal, which Fitzroy occassionally experience, also prevented the distortion between the scores becoming more marked. Except in their erratic shooting, Fitzroy played like a winning team all through".

Carlton missed our injured full forward Wally Ocock (who had kicked 3 goals against Collingwood in the previous round) and failed to score during the first and third quarters. However we did get the best of the Maroons in the second term, with Sam Chapman scoring Carlton's only goal. Future Carlton players in this Fitzroy side were first ruckman Mick Grace (at Princes Park 1903-1907) and rover Paddy Noonan (a Blue between 1901-'02).

At the end of this round Carlton were in 7th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 51.2.
