Game Review

The Cats took the points down at Kardinia Park to keep their early season momentum going. Carlton on the other hand were losing touch with the top team, Melbourne, now sitting 4 games adrift in 6th place.

Two teams and two different styles of football. Geelong playing the long kicking, fast, and open game, and the Blues tried to bottle it up and playing it tight. Carlton fumbled the ball when it had a scoring chance, and in the second quarter O'Brien had four easy attempts to goal with the result being one behind and three out of bounds. While the Blues missed easy chances, Geelong kicked two goals from the boundary and one from an over the shoulder snap. The home side held the advantage in the ruck, despite Bill Milroy's desperate efforts, and Laurie Kerr won on the wing.

Carlton coach Perc Bentley

"There was little between the two teams for most of the game, and I liked the way out team fought it out to the finish. We had a plan to keep Jackie (Johnny) James on to Peter Pianto and Neil Trezise when these rovers were resting in the forward pocket, and it worked well, although not enough to give us a win. We have no excuses, because we had the chance to win, especially in the second quarter. We frittered away good opportunities at that stage. But that's bad football, and we have to pay the penalty. Geelong showed more initiative than our chaps. They went into get that ball, and more often than not succeeded. Too many of our chaps stood flat-footed, waiting for the ball to come out to them."
