Game Review

The Blues went down to the Bulldogs by 21 points on this Friday NIght game, to go 0 and 6 to start the season for the first time in our history. There was endeavour for sure, but too many slips, slides and fumbles to ever really threaten the Dogs.

At selection Blues fans received a glimmer of hope when first-22 players Kennedy and Marchbank were returned to the lineup, replacing Garlett and Lamb.

On the night Levi Casboult would run through the banner for his 100th game, with his two young sons in tow as a great reminder that the future lay in the hands of our younger players, and with Dow, O'Brien and others we would hope we were on the right path.

The first quarter was an open affair, with the Blues kicking 3 through Casboult, Fisher and Wright. The Dogs were however carving us up with their handballs and worked their way ahead. The first 10 minutes of each quarter belonged to Carlton but we couldn't convert, and the net margin at quarter ends kept on increasing.

A big last quarter surge of effort raised some faint promises, through the impressively hard running of Charlie Curnow and subsequent marking, but he missed a couple of relatively easy ones and the spark fizzled. Curnow himself again hit the stats hard with 11 marks and 20 stats in another very good performance.

So the Blues lost and the performance was filled with endeavour but patchy. Too many fumbles, too many spoils, and too many times caught holding the ball.

Losing streaks: This loss meant we were 0 and 6, for the first time in our VFL -> AFL history. In this whole history we had only been 0 and 5 on 3 occasions - 1897, 1899, 1989 - but unfortunately in 2018 those waters broke and we went 0 and 6...
