Game Review

The Giant had awoken. Carlton pushed aside some worrying early season form to crush the struggling Hawks (who would go on to play in the finals) at Waverley in this memorable game.

The Blues amassed an amazing 390 possessions and kicked 16 goals in the second half to run rings around Hawthorn at their home ground. The smooth surface of Waverley, or AFL Park (or even VFL Park in it's heyday) worked a treat as outside runner Craig Bradley amassed a career-high 42 disposals. Greg Williams would poll the 3 votes with 17 kicks and 22 handballs, plus a goal, with Tom Alvin, Fraser Brown, Brett Ratten and Matthew Hogg all earning a lot of the ball.

But it was our new-found forward line that would shine, and take much of the focus for this part of the season. New Blues James Cook would kick 5 goals 5 in his third game whilst the zippy Troy Bond would kick 3 goals from 15 possessions. Stalwart Mil Hanna would kick 5 in a game that had the fans in raptures. Even better, with such a mild crowd, it didn't take too long to get out of Waverley, which was as famous for it's slow traffic movement as it was for it's green green fields.

The Blues would move into 6th with this huge win, erasing not only the percentage hit but also form from the Round 1 loss to Adelaide.
