Game Review

With Mick Grace settling in at centre half-forward and the team gelling around him, the Blues demolished a pathetic St Kilda team by 78 points at Princes Park. The Saints kicked 1.2 in the first quarter, and 2 points for the rest of the game.

"The visitors, with the wind dead straight at their favour only lost a point in the first quarter, but after the first change of ends it was no match, the home team simply romping over their opponents at every point of the game. The pronounced superiority of Carlton was forcibly demonstrated by the addition of 70 points to 2 after the first change of ends, the St.Kilda goal being in an uninterrupted state of siege right up until the finish. Nearly all the Carlton players were amazingly quick in handling and kicking the sodden ball. The present all round strength of the Carlton team is undeniable, and so great is the local interest that their success has aroused that the ladies of the district have presented the players with caps." (The Age, May 25)

Unbeaten after three matches, Carlton sat comfortably in second spot on the ladder, with a massive percentage of 246.3.

For history buffs, this game marked the first and only appearance for Carlton of Billy Orr who, three years later would begin a celebrated career in West Australian football. Over a span of more than 30 years, Orr was a Premiership rover at two clubs, and later, a long-serving Secretary of the WAFL.
