This was a danger game for both teams, because the loser faced the real prospect of tumbling out of the top four on the eve of the finals. Essendon started the match as favourites on their home turf, and proved the pundits right by rarely giving the lack-lustre Blues a sniff of the football. The Bombers led at every change, and finished up winning by more than ten goals. It was a poor effort by the Blues, more so because big-hearted ruckman Bill Milroy was playing his last game, and deserved a better send-off.
The only consolation for Carlton came after the game, when news came through that Collingwood had suffered a shock loss to lowly St Kilda - meaning that the Blues had scraped into the finals in fourth place.
