Game Review

Former captain Ern Henfry returned to the senior team to play "wing half forward" (half forward flank) in this match, which turned out to be his last. After a frustrating run of injuries that had taken the edge off his skills, Ern had recently resigned the captaincy in favour of his deputy Ken Hands, and had been playing in the seconds at his own request to regain form. He had been one the seconds better players the previous week and had earned a recall, but late in this game he damaged one of his knees again. Not long after the final siren, he called time on his illustrious career.
The crowd for this match was the largest attendance at Princes Park so far this year.
Collingwood were kicking the ball high into their forward line in the first half, and the Carlton defenders marked everything that came their way. The visitors reverted to their short game and used stab kicks to great effect. In the third quarter they scored 5.5 to 3.2 and looked the better side.
At the start of the final term the Woods rushed the ball to their forward line and scored a goal to lead 9.12 - 7.11. Four more times they stormed, surging forward, but the Blues' backline stood tall and repelled the attacks.
The Argus;
"Then Jack Howell, with a glorious 50 yard drop kick, found Bill Milroy, and Fred Davies pulled down Milroy's pass in a goal-front scrimmage. His goal galvanised the Blues. Players on whom the pace had appeared to be telling tore into the struggle like giants refreshed. Collingwood's confidence took a bad jolt as Howell began to claw down marks high over the leaping Magpie packs, it took a further jolt as Carlton's Keith Warburton hooked the ball from a wild scrum and goaled with a kind of skidding left foot snap”.
“From that point Warburton became the Magpie's chief menace. He squirmed in the air behind the soaring six footers, and came out with the ball to level the scores 9.12 all. Warburton flitted gaily from one forward pocket to the other. His next superb long shot hit the post high up. Then, scooping on a low pass from Fred Stafford, he goaled with another left-foot "skidder" to put Carlton eight points in front. Warburton's sixth goal came from a lightning snap in front of the battling packs, and the Magpie defenders, who had done well all day, found themselves swept aside by waves of confident attackers. Collingwood was completely baffled in those last dramatic minutes by the powerful, straight-ahead drives of the Blues."

Did You See....?

"Carlton team-mates twice clap amazing marking efforts by full forward Keith Warburton?
For the first mark, Warburton leapt late behind the pack, soared above a tangle of six-footers, and clutched the ball just above their outstretched fingers.
For the second, he almost tied himself in a knot to scoop in a ball swinging away from him."
(The Argus)

Footnote

This victory was Carlton's 60th win in 119 matches against Collingwood, and the Blues regained the advantage they had lost at Victoria Park the previous May.
