Game ReviewDespite being defeated by Essendon the previous week, Carlton came into this second-last game of the home and away season assured of the minor premiership. Two wins and a mass of percentage ahead of every other team, the Navy Blues were perfectly positioned for a tilt at their fourth flag in five years.
Carlton’s opponent on this Saturday afternoon at Princes Park was Richmond, who had yet to register a win over the Blues and were sitting seventh. The Tigers’ chances of breaking their duck were boosted when the home side named a team that included four first-gamers in John 'Jack' Massey, Tom McCluskey, Jack Bristow and Archie Wilson, along with hardened defender Percy Sheehan. Missing through injury or exclusion were Norman Clark, Martin Gotz, Alex Lang, Bill Goddard and Reuben Holland.
In an open and entertaining match in front of an appreciative crowd, the Tigers stuck with their hosts throughout the first half, although they constantly over-used the football and Carlton scored regularly from turnovers. The Blues’ centreline of Clancy, McGregor and Jamieson controlled the game, aided by the experience and guile of captain-coach ‘Pompey’ Elliott in the ruck. Back to his elusive best, Vin Gardiner kicked five goals at full-forward as the Blues beat the Tigers yet again, by 17 points.
Best of the debutants was Bristow, whose second goal for the match was a real highlight. After marking deep in a forward pocket - hard-up against the point post - he threaded the ball through with a curling torpedo punt that brought most of the crowd to its feet.
At the end of this round Carlton were in 1st spot on the ladder with a percentage of 164.9.
During the third quarter, Rod McGregor copped a heavy blow on the chin, although he continued and played well throughout the rest of the match. In the dressing room after the game, he asked a team-mate what quarter they had just played, as he couldn't remember a thing!
