Game Review
In the second quarter of this game at Punt Road, Richmond played outstanding, but inaccurate football, and squandered a golden opportunity to beat Premiership favourites Carlton. Trailing by two goals at quarter-time, the Tigers kicked with the wind in the second term and were constantly in attack from bell to bell. The problem was that no-one in black and yellow could find the goal-mouth.Richmond had twelve shots at goal – all of them from gettable distances – and scored 2.10. Carlton meanwhile, had only one opportunity and brought up two flags, staying right with the Tigers before eventually wearing them down by 7 points. Once again the Blues had found a way to win against a committed opponent, and remained on track for a third consecutive flag.
This result sealed the minor premiership for the Navy Blues, especially after Essendon lost to South Melbourne at the Lake Oval. The first three teams into the 1908 finals would therefore be Carlton, Essendon and St Kilda, with South Melbourne and Collingwood set to meet the following week to decide fourth place.
Footnote
This was the first VFL game between Richmond and Carlton at Punt Road, although the two teams had met there often in VFA matches between 1885 and 1896.The Richmond Guardian August 22 (p3) said the New Zealand football team was at the ground and received a warm welcome at half time. When Carlton reappeared, "the boys of the dark blue gave the Maori boys three hearty cheers."
