Game Review

Despite giving up 4th place to St Kilda in Round 15, Carlton must have been confident in regaining it in Round 16. The Saints would take on ladder leaders Collingwood, while the Blues would take on the lowly Tigers.

Carlton would win, sure enough, if tightly.

But the Saints would pull a massive win against the Pies - by 38 points - to lock in 4th place and their shot at the finals. St Kilda now only had to beat Geelong and Essendon - 5th and 6th placed teams - to keep the Blues out of the 1913 finals race.

Richmond won the toss and kicked to the Lygon Street end, slighty favoured by a strong cross wind.
The visitors attacked and soon had two points and from a scrimmage, a kick off the ground went through for a goal.
The Blues relatiated, Jack Wells kicked to Vin Gardiner and his place kick went through for a goal. Both Gordon Green and Viv Valentine's shots hit the post. Scores were now even.
Good play by George Challis, Tom Clancy, Harry Haughton and onto Gordon Green, his snap bought up Carlton's second goal.
Play resumed and excellent work by (Andy O'Donnell)) and Jack Wells enabled George Bruce, from a free, kicked the Blues' third. Then Andy O'Donnell received a free kick who passed to Jack Wells and he added the fourth major.
The Tigers soon replied with their second goal. This was soon followed by their third, making the difference 6 points. Wells scored a behind, but he soon had it again and passed to Vin Gardiner who marked in front. His kicked dropped short but Gordonn Green took a brilliant mark and kicked truly. Richmond had another shot at goal but the kick just missed.
At half time the Blues held a 10 point lead.
Harry Curtis kicked to Harry Haughton who added Carlton's sixth goal. The visitors attacked and registered a goal. Another attacked was turned by Richard Moran.
The Tigers went forward adding a behind and another goal before Gordon Green to Vin Gardiner and he added the steadier to give the Blues a 9 point lead at the end of the quarter.
Carlton added two points and then for 10 minutes or so, there was no score by either team. Gordon Green passed the ball to Harry Curtis who ran in and scored his first and only Carlton goal and the Blues' eighth..
Gordon Green scored another goal while the Tigers managed to add two more. The Blues running out victors by 12 points.

"The strong bleak wind made matters most uncomfortable all round. Spectators sat or stood half shivering, and consequently they were inclined to be hypercritical. Many of them were blaming the field umpire for awarding 25 frees to Richmond and only 3 to Carlton in the course of the match. Certainly he might have made a few blunders, but the best umpire has but one pair of eyes and one set of legs to carry on with."
(Age August 11 p14)

At the end of this round Carlton were in 5th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 105.7.
