Game Review

The Blues fell short to a determined Giants. By Rose Zarucky, Carlton Media

Q1 breakdown: The game started strong with a brilliant tackle from Jack Martin, resulting in a goal within the first minute. Harry McKay provided a good marking option down the line while Jacob Weitering was a reliable pillar in defensive 50. The Giants moved the ball freely on the outside, but Carlton’s work in the clinches and a strong defence held up well. Some strong forward pressure from Eddie Betts and a clever snap from Paddy Dow saw Carlton take the lead, before Sam Walsh continued his recent goalkicking form. A strong contested mark from Harry McKay resulted in a goal, with Carlton’s efficiency in attack countered by GWS missing some opportunities in front of goal.

Q2 breakdown: The second term started in a familiar fashion, with McKay taking a big contested mark in the forward 50: however, he was unable to convert truly. It was a contrast of styles at Metricon Stadium, with Carlton dominating in the contest (+20 contested possessions) while GWS worked the ball around the ground (+50 uncontested possessions). The intercept work of Liam Jones and a vibrant Tom Williamson kept the ball moving forward, while Ed Curnow was as combative and dogged as ever. The Blues had the territory at the end of the quarter, but both teams were held goalless in the second term.

Q3 breakdown: The skipper Patrick Cripps started the term strong, laying a forceful tackle and setting up a scoring opportunity. Marc Pittonet had the better of the hitouts against the milestone man Shane Mumford, while Sam Docherty read the ball well across half back. The pressure from the Blues was a standout, with Jack Newnes and Cameron Polson laying crucial run-down tackles. Carlton was able to hold the ball in their forward half with 17 inside 50s, but it took until the final minute of the term - courtesy of Marc Murphy’s clever effort - for the Blues to hit the scoreboard in a meaningful way.

Q4 breakdown: The Giants put the pressure on, kicking three goals in a row early in the final term. Carlton struggled to keep the ball locked in their forward 50, with the Giants attacking style too much for the Blues to get a handle on. Jacob Weitering, Jones and Docherty worked tirelessly in the defensive 50 as the Giants had repeat forward entries but weren’t able to make use of the ball going forward.

Best: S. Walsh, J. Weitering, M. Murphy, T. Williamson, J. Martin, H. McKay.

Teague: We’ve got to get better
For David Teague, a four-quarter effort is what his side will need to show in order to contend. By Marni Olsson-Young, Carlton Media
“Our ability to consistently make the right decisions when the pressure comes: that’s our challenge, that’s our growth, we’ve got to get better.” For Carlton senior coach David Teague, a four-quarter effort is what his side will need to show in order to contend among the best. Speaking to media following the Blues’ 9-point loss to the Giants at Metricon Stadium on Thursday night, Teague believes growth will come off the back of consistency of effort and decision making. “When then pressure comes, we need to become stronger in the contest and we need to be stronger with our decision-making with the ball and understanding what’s required in the game in those times,” Teague said. “We probably just needed to get it in deep and even if they intercepted, at least if it was deep it would have to come through 17 or 18 of us. “But when we turn it over short, they’ll probably only come back through eight of us.” With three games left of a home-and-away season like no other, Teague is eager for his side to make the most of its opportunity to improve. “The missed opportunity is that we didn’t play for four quarters. We go out there to play for four quarters and put the effort in and make the right decisions,” he said. “Right now, we’re not there and we’re probably sitting where we should sit because of our ability to do it for four quarters. “What we do have is belief that we can do it, we’ve showed that we can do it for periods of games so it gives us belief but we’ve got to be able to do it.” Teague attributes the loss in part to allowing the Giants to play the game on their terms, with strong marking allowing them control the play. “We probably let them mark the ball a bit too much early and then in the second half I thought we actually squeezed the ground, we got the game played in our half,” he said. “I think we had the inside 50s but unfortunately there were probably a couple factors that really hurt late. “Our ball use going inside 50 when it was wet and slippery and we tried to go shallow, kick it short inside 50 and it got turned over and we allowed them to tackle for shorter pitch.”
