Game Review

Carlton suffered their second consecutive loss to the Hawks in 1987, this close 1 point loss being a lot better than their 45 point loss in the opening round.

A simple look on the ladder would dictate that the Blues would have to find a way to beat the dominant Hawks in the finals to take the Flag.

''Now we know we can beat Hawks.
I don't know whether I should laugh or cry. I can't decide if being beaten by a point will do us more good than had we won the game. To tell the truth, I think it will. Saturday proved three things. The first is that we are undoubtedly a better side this year than last. We can regroup during matches and have a new-found toughness under pressure. The second is that we can beat Hawthorn. Considering the fact that we were 34 points up 20 minutes into the second quarter, proves that we can play better football than the Hawks. We just have to learn to combat their running strength. With the inclusion of three vital players that will occur. The three players who would play tomorrow if fully fit or available, and would carry enough individual influence to reshape the performance are Wayne Johnston, Wayne Blackwell and David Rhys-Jones. With those three back in the side we will be a completely different proposition. And when you consider that Jon Dorotich, Richard Dennis and Paul Meldrum were well below their best, the real Carlton has yet to show itself this year. This season is looking identical to 1982. Eveything said then that Richmond was too talented and too strong for us, especially after it beat us in the second semi, but we turned the tables in the big one. The same thing could happen this year. The third thing to come out of Saturday's Grand Final preview was our ability to come back. When Old Father Time (Michael Tuck) popped through one of those typically flukey Hawthorn goals, everybody at VFL Park knew in their hearts that the game was over. Everyone except for the 20 Blueboys and me. With another slaughter imminent Carlton fought back and superbly led by Stephen Kernahan, Mark Naley and Jimmy Buckley, who did some Buckleyesque things late in the game, we managed to claw back and just about steal the game. We will beat Hawthorn. Our spirit has not been damaged. Our will-to-win has only been strengthened. I jsut feel sorry for Collingwood, which will surely feel the impact of a fired-up Carlton on the rebound at the MCG. - Carl Toner Inside Football.''

''Blues Big Winners
Carlton was the big winner of Round 14. Hawthorn may have emerged as one point winner but I disagree that Hawthorn still has a big pyschological edge. Robert Walls can approach the finals with confidence. Since the opening round of the season when Hawthorn exerted such superiority over the Blues, Carlton has made great progress. Mentally, it knows it has bridged the gap. For the majority of Saturday's game it was the better side. Hawthorn stormed back to take a winning lead but it was Carlton that lifted under pressure. The Blues will continue to improve and it will approach the finals with confidence. They should have little difficulty in holding top position on the ladder. That vital rest in the finals will warrant Carlton being premiership favourite. - Brian Hansen Footy Week.''
