Game Review
Still smarting from a surprise defeat by Essendon the previous week, Carlton hosted the improving Collingwood at Princes Park in this round, and thrashed them by 40 points. The Blues’ defence – lacklustre in defeat by the Same Old – snapped back into form and restricted the Magpie’s dangerous attack to five goals for the entire game.At full-back, Doug Gillespie was Carlton’s star, and his duel with Collingwood champion Dick Lee was highlight. Lee kicked three of Collingwood’s five goals, but in most of the one-out duels, Gillespie was the master. Vin Gardiner made a welcome return from injury to kick 4 majors for the Blues, while big Bill Marchbank contributed another two in a versatile Carlton forward line.
In a significant round of matches, University claimed another big scalp by defeating St Kilda at East Melbourne, and Melbourne demolished South Melbourne at the Lake Oval. With five rounds left in the season, there were still eight clubs in finals contention. Only Richmond and last-placed Geelong seemed to be out of the running. Carlton retained top spot on the ladder with a percentage of 176.3.
