Game Review

Carlton’s pace, ball handling and class completely overwhelmed Hawthorn in ideal conditions at Princes Park. Although the first and third quarters were fairly even, the Blues turned it on in the other two quarters to win comfortably by 79 points, with the Mayblooms kept scoreless in the last term.

Three changes on Thursday night meant the Blues would field their weakest team for some time. Gordon Mackie was commencing his first week of suspension, captain Mocha Johnson could not be considered due to a leg injury and Jim Crowe was omitted. Soapy Vallence was named as 19th man. Joe Kelly, Alby De Luca and Wally Mutimer, for his debut game, came into the side. Kelly ended up being a late withdrawal and was replaced by Frank Finn.

The game commenced with some early fumbling from both sides before straight kicking from the centre brought Hawthorn the first two goals, the first being a set shot from ex-Blue Jack Green, and the second a long punt at goal. Hawthorn led by 13 points before Carlton, playing poorly, had scored. Allowed to run loose, Ron Cooper continually drove the ball into attack and two goals were scored, the first to Ron Cooper. Crisp and Ron Cooper then combined for the third goal. A late rally by Hawthorn resulted in a goal and when the bell sounded for quarter time Carlton had a lead of five points.

Carlton came out firing in the second term. Strong ruck work, good position play and a pacy forward line saw four goals scored in quick succession – Bullen from a free kick, Ron Cooper with a nicely judged shot, and Anderson with two goals. Shea and Crisp were very prominent and setting up many attacks. The Blues were now winning everywhere and confident, attacking play resulted in another three goals, two to Clarke and another to Ron Cooper. The Mayblooms scored a late goal but Carlton’s great quarter had established a 44 point lead at half time. Hawthorn could do nothing right, even the bounce of the ball going the wrong way. Bullen, Shea, Anderson, Crisp and Ron Cooper were all conspicuous in a great quarter.

Opening the third quarter, Bullen burst through the pack in classic fashion and shot a low pass to Anderson who snapped the Carlton eleventh goal. Gill and De Luca combined to stop a Hawthorn attack before Crisp, scouting brilliantly, passed to Jack Cooper for goal number twelve. Crisp again was brilliant and shot a sizzling pass to Shea who punted the Blues’ third in a row. However, Hawthorn were not yet done and rallied well, kicking three goals in a row. Carlton’s reply was swift, with goals to Anderson and Bob Green, but Hawthorn, putting up a determined effort and matching Carlton around the ground, scored another three goals to make the difference 35 points at the last change. It had been the best quarter of the game, with eleven goals and some great play shown from both sides.

Gill, with a strained tendon, was replaced by Vallence at three quarter time, with the latter going to Centre Half Forward. Attacking at the bounce, Shea passed to Crisp for goal 16. Shortly after, Ron Cooper easily got around two defenders and kicked his fifth goal. Carlton was now dominating and it was obvious that Hawthorn’s great effort in the third had left them spent; Carlton playing and scoring as if in a training drill. Jack Cooper scored the 18th goal and two more in quick time to Anderson made his tally six goals. The Blues were not tiring at all and showed off their brilliant skills as the quarter went on. Another two goals were scored for Carlton, before the bell sounded on a dominating game of football by the Blues.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 4th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 125.7.
