Game Review

Playing at home, Carlton defeated lowly Melbourne by five goals in this Saturday afternoon, but Blues coach Jack Worrall wasn’t happy. Why? Because the goal-kicking yips that had plagued his side the previous year had reappeared. A stickler for the basics of the game, Worrall believed that his team should have kicked 15.8 instead of 8.15, and let his charges know it.

In similar fashion to the previous week, the Blues matched the Redlegs throughout the first half, then shifted up a gear and roared home to a 15th successive victory since defeating Essendon in August of the previous year. Carlton forwards Gardiner and Caine kicked five goals between them, as the undefeated Blues’ percentage jumped to a massive 184.62.

In other significant developments in this round, Essendon was beaten by St Kilda, and South Melbourne just scraped home against wooden spoon favourites Geelong. Essendon was now two wins behind Carlton at the top of the ladder, with St Kilda and South Melbourne another two wins away in third and fourth.
