Game Review

Monday's Geelong Advertiser said the crowd was about 1,500. Perhaps this was a misprint and The Argus said it was a large crowd.
show_image.php?id=15623At centre half-forward for Geelong in this match was future Blue Jim Flynn, who was to play with Carlton between 1903-1910. On a half-back flank was Henry McShane (at Carlton 1899-1904) while Joe McShane (a Blue 1902-1904) was their first ruckman.

"It was curiosity rather than hope that brought so big a crowd to see Geelong and Carlton play at Princes Park, where the conditions were against good football. The place men crowded a good deal towards the centre, and this at first hampered Geelong, but they had the game well in hand all through, and could have played a lot harder had the conditions demanded it. They seemed to bear in mind all through that they had a bigger game waiting them a week later, and were not going to waste their ammunition in making a fancy bag. There was one consolation for Carlton. Last week I said that the man who could stop McCallum, of Geelong, had yet to be discovered. He was found on Saturday, in the lightly-built, unassuming, but unquestionably clever little footballer, Hannah, and Carlton were mightily pleased with his success" - The Argus, July 19, 1897.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 7th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 45.3.
