Game Review
Carlton went into the Grand Final Replay missing seven premiership players, through suspension and injury: Wayne Johnston, Paul Meldrum, David Rhys-Jones, Tom Alvin, Shane Robertson, Justin Madden and Warren McKenzie.Carlton had one new recruit, David Kernahan, playing and also played Steve Da Rui for his first game in his second year at the club. Kernahan kicked the goal which sealed the match for Carlton.
The match highlight was a courageous Stephen Silvagni mark 20 minutes into the third quarter, and it acted as a turning point in the game. He jumped against the flight of the ball, ignoring the on-rushing pack. The ensuing goal was an appropriate reward.
The best player on the ground was Wayne Blackwell who missed the previous years premiership because of injury. He picked up 29 possessions and took several telling marks against taller opponents.
Blues are Hot!
Carlton, despite the absence of several of its stars and with only one victory in the pre-season build-up, confounds the critics again proving its superiority over Hawthorn in a replay of last year's Grand Final. The Blues lead from start to finish and recorded a convincing 15 point win. - Tony Greenberg Inside Football.
