Leonard Hector (Len) Clarke was born in Bendigo, and was an experienced defender from Coburg, who spent some time in Carlton’s Reserves team before being selected for his senior debut against Richmond in the opening round of 1931. Aided by a strong wind in the first quarter, the Blues bolted away to a six goal lead at the first break – but thereafter Richmond got on top, and eventually won by nine points.

Clarke was left out of the team for the following week, and was never able to regain his place.

Clarke passed away on the 26th January, 1975 aged 69.
