The Argus' Monday report of the Carlton loss to Essendon at the East Melbourne C.G. mentions that Carlton's only goal was kicked by Nairne.
Nairne was not listed in the Carlton team in the Saturday morning's edition of the paper.
(Nash was listed as an emergency, a mispelling?) see below.

1884 August 09
Nairn is in the Carlton team to play Hotham at the Hotham Recreational Ground.

The Footballer Annual 1879 says there was a H. Nairn playing with Hotham United.

1885 May 25
Nairn was named in the Carlton Second Twenty team squad of 23 that played Daylesford at Daylesford on the Queen's Birthday Holiday.

1885 R. Nairn is pictured in the Hotham team photo taken in Adelaide, a relative?

Jack Nairn was associated with the Carlton Cricket Club in 1896.

1891 June 13
An old players match was played against a Geelong team on the MCG in aid of charity.
The Saturday Age had the Carlton team squad of 25 named and one team members was a J. Nairn.
