Henry Edward "Harry" Nudd.

"THESE DOUGHTY WARRIORS HAVE PASSED AWAY,
BUT MEN, QUITE AS GOOD, CROP UP ALWAY,
TO STRENGTHEN THE GLORY OF CARLTON'S NAME,
AND BLAZON HER DEEDS ON THE SCROLL OF FAME.
IT CHEERS MY HEART, AND IT WARMS MY BLOOD,
TO WITNESS THE BY-PLAY OF STALWART NUDD -
NOW HERE, NOW THERE;
THEN EVERYWHERE;
AND THOSE THAT OPPOSE HIM ARE ROLLED IN THE MUD."

Unfortunately we do not have a photo of Harry. However, we have an image of his younger brother Charles Nudd. On Charles' bio page there is also an image from what is believed to be a past players' team taken in late 1881. The enlarged photo of a player looks remarkably like Charles, or perhaps it may be Harry as his career ended in 1881.

1874 Recruited from Collingwood (the original club)

1874 Nudd named in Carlton team to play St.Kilda at the St.Kilda ground 12th September.
(The Argus)

1874 In His first season, good at a forward or back position, and unerring in his kicking.
(The Footballer 1875. p27)

1875 Nudd named in The Argus as playing for a Carlton First Twenty side against a Carlton 25 in a scratch match at Royal Park on Saturday 8th. May.

1875 Carlton playing Melbourne in the return match; for the game was almost over before Nudd, the hero of the first game, "sent the ball neatly between the post amid tremendous excitement" for the Blues to run out winners by one goal to nil.
(The Carlton Story. H.Buggy and H. Bell p34)

1875 Winner of drop kicking contest with a 60 yard effect, and was among the prominent players about this time.
(The Herald. June 14 1919.)

1876 Has developed into a grand forward, or back player being especially good near his adversaries goal, winning the First Twenty drop kicking with 74 yards (67.6M), and the Challenge Drop Kick with 71 yards(64.9M).
(The Footballer 1876. p35)

1877 Kicks as well as ever, which is saying a good deal, a trifle "in and out" at times but has done some good service.
( The Footballer 1877. p35)

1877 Drop kicked the ball 71YD. 2FT. (65.53M) Madeliene Street Reserve August 2 1877.*

1877 October
Harry Nudd.
At least 2500 people went to the new Carlton ground at the cemetery end of Swanston Street (Madeliene St.) in October 1877 to see the sports.
St.Kilda, Melbourne, Hotham, Albert Park, Ballarat, Barwon and Geelong as well as Carlton each sent one of their best kickers.

Eventually the Carlton champion H. Nudd carried home the exotic trophy, a vase with a silver-mounted emu egg, after kicking the ball 71 yards (64.9M).
Earlier that day, competing against Carlton team mates, he had actually kicked 74 yards (67.6M).

(A Game Of Our Own. Geoffrey Blainey page 69.)

1878 Still retains his great kicking abilities, a good change back. In general play, has displayed more activity than usual.
The Footballer 1878. p31)

H. Nudd scored 1 goal during the 1878 season.
(The Footballer 1878. p75)

H. Nudd played in both the Carlton-Waratah Rugby game at the M.C.G. 30 June, and the Australian Football match on 1 July 1878.

1879 Owing to a serious illness has fallen off greatly during the season, both in straight kicking and general play.
(The Footballer 1879. p29)

1880 July 31
H. Nudd umpired the match between Carlton and Hamilton at the East Melbourne Cricket Ground.
His brother? Charles Nudd played for the Blues in this game.

1881 H. A. Nudd of Carlton at (old) Princes Oval October 8.
Drop kicked the ball 74 yards 1 foot.(67.97 M)

(Everything You Wanted To Know About Australian Rules Football But Couldn't Be bothered Asking,Graeme Atkinson,p55*)

1882 Harry Nudd was now an umpire.

(The History of The Carlton Football Club, Brian Hansen p55)

HARRY NUDD'S SILVER LONG KICK TROPHY

It was reported in the Echuca Riverine Herald March 13 (p3) 1883, that Harry Nudd's silver trophy for long-kicking, the "silver challenge cup of the Carlton Football Club" was taken by his wife (Hannah) in a legal dispute back in August 1881.
As well as the challenge cup, a silver tea service was also taken. Harry hasn't been able to retrieve his valued possessions.

"Athletes appear to accept marital discipline uneasily. We have had two lately in the divorce court, and now a third, a Mr. Nudd, a printer, who was deprived by a brother printer, he alleges, not only of his wife, but of the silver challenge cup of the Carlton Football Club, which Mr. Nudd pathetically remarked was highly prized by him." (Ballarat Star, March 13 p3)

It seems Harry may have worked for the Argus;
