Derek Coghlan was a taken at pick 53 in the 1989 National Draft, the club's 4th pick of that draft. Coghlan had previousy played with the Goulburn Valley club Lemnos. Coghlan was a versatile player and listed as a utility in that draft. He was blessed with an abundance of natural ability, Coghlan represented the Goulburn Valley at Under 15 level, and in the Under 17 Caltex Championships. In 1989, the year that he was recruited, he had been a regular contributor for Lemnos Senior team.
