Colin Prosser

Secretary 1955 - 1956

Colin Prosser was a former journalist and ABC broadcaster who served a brief term as Secretary of the Carlton Football Club in 1955 and ‘56. During World War II, Prosser had been one of Australia’s famous “Rats of Tobruk” – the 14,000-strong force of Australian, British and Indian troops who defied the might of Germany’s Afrika Corps and held the strategically important Libyan port of Tobruk for eight months in 1941.

After the war, Colin worked as a journalist on The Argus newspaper in Melbourne, before moving on to radio with the Australian Broadcasting Commission - in Australia and abroad. On September 1, 1955, Prosser succeeded Larry Floyd as Secretary of the Carlton Football Club. In signing off as Secretary, Floyd wrote the following words in Carlton’s Annual Report; “To my successor, Mr. Colin Prosser, I wish the greatest measure of success in the carrying out of the many duties that are required from a full-time Secretary of a League club. In the short time that I have worked with him, I feel that he has the capacity, enthusiasm and energy for the post and deserves all the support and loyalty that can be given him in the task of getting the club on to the top of the list.”

Sadly Colin’s health let him down and he was forced to step down in January, 1956. Carlton’s “Jack of all Trades,” Newton Chandler, stepped in briefly until Prosser’s return in March, but a few months later Colin informed the club that he was unable to continue, and his successor, Alan Cowie was appointed in August.

In the years after his departure from Carton, Colin and his wife relocated to Queensland, where he passed away on February 18, 2016 at the age of 94. Ten days later, Carlton players wore black armbands as a tribute when Carlton met Essendon in a pre-season NAB Challenge match at Princes Park.
