Bruce Burns was recruited from local club Moomba Park. He came up through the U/19's (1977 to 1978) to later play Reserve Grade Football in 1979 for the Blues. Burns was a hard at it rover who liked to kick a goal. He was also a key member of the U/19's 1978 premiership which was under the guidance of former Carlton premiership winger Bryan Quirk.

Burns kicked six goals in the Grand Final and was named in the best players for the Blues, both he and Darren Linkins kicked six that day. Burns provided a lot of drive around the packs and was one of the catalysts for the premiership victory. The Blues came back from 11 points down at 3/4 time to kick 10 goals to 2 in the final quarter against Collingwood to run at victors by 40 points.

Burns proved to be a profilic goalkicker with the Blues, but his timing at Carlton couldn't have been worse with him being a rover. Competition was stiff with the Blues starting to build up an All-Star mosquito fleet that consisted of Rod Ashman, Jim Buckley, Ken Sheldon, Alex Marcou, Wayne Harmes, Vin Catoggio and the like. Senior spots were always going to be hard to get and unfortunately for Burns this proved to be the case.

He did not manage a Senior game for Carlton.
