Game Review

Superstar's knee injury sours Magpies' win over arch-rivals.
A suspected serious knee injury to Collingwood superstar Brianna Davey has soured a strong win over arch-rivals Carlton at Ikon Park on Sunday. Davey went down late in the fourth term while attempting a change of direction to lay a tackle. Collingwood's 19-point win was punctuated not only by Davey's injury, but three goals from 50m penalties thanks to some undisciplined acts from the Blues in the 6.8 (44) to 3.7 (25) result. Collingwood coach Steve Symonds said it was premature to say Davey had suffered her second career ACL tear. "A little bit of mixed emotions for everyone at the moment," Symonds said post-match. "Fingers crossed it's positive news for her, but at this stage, it's still a little bit too early to say." A vocal crowd of 3,511 watched on as Carlton got off to a strong start, snatching an early goal from a clever Lucy McEvoy rove off the pack, but after that Collingwood took control of the game. Cleverly using the ball by foot, the Pies looked to attack through the corridor and provide their bolstered forward line with plenty of opportunity. Jaimee Lambert and Sarah Rowe starred for the Pies, winning 22 and 21 disposals respectively, while pressure across the ground forced poor ball movement from the Blues. Carlton often looked to long, high kicks inside 50, playing right into the hands of Stacey Livingstone, Ruby Schleicher and Lauren Butler who mopped up and rebounded all day. Midfielder Grace Egan was also felled at the start of the second quarter, copping a knee to the back while courageously going back with the flight of the ball, and will head for precautionary scans.

An unfortunate blow
Collingwood had the game tied up with less than five minutes remaining when co-captain and competition best and fairest winner Brianna Davey planted her foot and fell to the ground. The star previously tore her ACL in 2018 when playing for the Blues and had a knowing look of devastation on her face immediately.

Undisciplined acts
Carlton will be ruing lazy errors leading to three straight goals for the Pies off the back of 50m penalties. With one minute remaining in the first half, Darcy Vescio fell victim to the new stand rule, putting Ruby Schleicher in the goalsquare for the easiest of goals. Thirty seconds later, Elise O'Dea failed to return the ball on the full to ex-teammate Alison Downie, which saw Downie kick her 10th straight goal after the siren. O'Dea was again the culprit halfway through the third, with Aishling Sheridan guided to the goalsquare by the umpires.

The roar of the crowd
There might have been just over 3,000 fans in the house, but it certainly felt louder. With every crunching tackle, umpiring decision and goal kicked, the stands erupted. None more so than for each of Courtney Jones and Abbie McKay's first goals in the AFLW. Both kicked toward the Blues' cheer squad, the roar was deafening.

Egan Injury.
Scans have revealed Grace Egan has sustained two broken ribs and a punctured lung. Carlton will be without Grace Egan for at least the next month. The popular young Blue came from the field early in the second quarter of Sunday’s clash with Collingwood. Following a strong start to the season opener, Egan didn’t return to the ground after being injured in a marking contest. Scans post-match subsequently revealed that Egan had sustained two broken ribs and a punctured lung. The injury is expected to see Egan – who had played every game consecutively since her debut up until this point – ruled out for the next 4-6 weeks. “Grace suffered two broken ribs and a punctured lung as a result of a collision in a marking contest during the second quarter against Collingwood on Sunday,” Head of Women’s Football Brett Munro said. “Grace immediately came from the field and was taken into the rooms for assessment by our doctors. She was then transferred to Epworth Hospital for scans, where her injuries were revealed. “Grace stayed for observation overnight and is now recovering at home and in good spirits.” Egan joins second-year Blue Mimi Hill on the injury list, with the Game Changers continuing to adopt a ‘wait-and-see’ approach on the youngster’s availability in her return from an ACL injury sustained last season.
