The Chase for Judd

Chris Judd, the 2004 Brownlow Medallist and considered by many to be game's premier player, announced shortly after the end of West Coast's season that he was leaving the West and bound for Victoria.

In the ensuing weeks, Judd would select 4 Victorian based Clubs - Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon and Melbourne - with a view to potentially moving there from 2008 onwards. On 2 October 2007, Judd advised the second last of these Clubs, Collingwood, of his desire to move to Carlton.

This news, together with Geelong's stunning Premiership win, was on the tips of all footy fan's lips for days. Despite constant rumours and apparent media agendas suggesting Richmond could recruit Judd through the Pre-Season Draft, despite all logic, the Blues, Judd and the Eagles announced the trade on the Thursday of trade week after a number of days of negotiation. Below are some selected quotes from what was one of the biggest stories of the year:

“We are delighted that Chris has seen fit to nominate the Carlton Football Club as his future home at a time when the Club is embarking on what will be a new and exciting era." “Now that Chris has selected Carlton, we will formally commence discussions to finalise a trade appropriate to all parties. We are extremely confident that we can strike a suitable deal, but are mindful that there is still much to be done to secure Chris’s services.”
Greg Swann, CEO

"The best we understand is when he went up to Sydney for his operation, they performed a labotomy instead of a groin operation - and as a result he's going to Carlton"
Eddie McGuire, Collingwood CEO, showing good grace on not being Judd's preferred destination

“It’s exciting … I’m excited about being at a new club and being a part of some of those big Melbourne games. The Carlton-Collingwoods, and Essendons and these type of blockbuster games. To be able to play in them on a semi-regular occasion will be very exciting.”
Chris Judd, New Carlton Player, October 11, 2007

“It’s just fantastic to get a player of Chris’s quality, not just on-field but off-field, we see the professionalism and he’s just a quality bloke all around. I know he’ll get his body right, he’ll do everything he has to do for the Carlton footy club. As we’ve seen, as a player, he’s team first all the time, so for us it’s just a great coup."
Brett Ratten, Carlton Coach, October 11, 2007
