Game ReviewImage

This game was a cracker as the Blues took on the highly fancied Eagles, who had been as dominant a team as you could see in AFL's history. Indeed, they entered this game with a Match Ratio of 100% (meaning they were unbeaten - the Match Ratio was used in this season with the 'bye' being in play). Carlton were lower than mid-table, in 10th place, yet took the points from the powerhouse West Australians. The Eagles would lose steam at the end of the season, and lose the GF to Hawthorn.

But in this game the Blues would triumph, despite losing SOS pretty early in the game with a knee. Other than the close margin, it may be best remembered when Darren Tarczon charged off the bench and almost split Guy McKenna in two with one of the best shirt-fronts of all time. Simon Minton-Connell kicked the winning goal from a tight angle in front of the Robert Heatley Stand late in the game and it was the Eagles first defeat for the season. One lucky Blueseum contributor was standing directly behind Minton-Connells kick and advised "He kicked from about where the 50 m line intersected the boundary on the Hawthorn / Pratt stand side of the ground and the ball was never missing from the moment it left the boot."

This was also Carlton's 600th win at Princes Park, at the completion of this game they had played 848 games, with 600 wins, 233 losses and 15 drawn games.

This game is remembered fondly by Carlton fans, and is considered one of our best wins in the Home & Away rounds of the 1990's. For more games like this, please click here.
