Game Review

Carlton's winning run came to an end under the relentless pressure applied by Hawthorn at Glenferrie Oval. Despite the return of Brent Crosswell from suspension, and Garry Crane from a short-lived retirement, the Hawks didn't allow the Blues to settle at any stage. Carlton only got their system going as the Hawks tired in the last term, but the Blues' strong surge at the end still fell short by three points. Carlton farewelled popular dual Premiership player Barry Gill after this match; his 132nd and last in guernsey number 21. And as this remarkably even season continued, the Blueboys slipped to third behind Essendon and Richmond, with St Kilda and Hawthorn rounding out the top five.

Hawthorn had previously lost two matches because of poor play under pressure and it almost occurred again in this match. After outplaying Carlton in all departments - and statistically - and with so many of the Blues only making token contributions, Hawthorn was able to stave off defeat in the closing minutes. Carlton must have one consoling thought in defeat.... most of the Blues were outclassed and yet they could still have won the match. It is rare to see a player of Jesaulenko's ability being subdued and it was pleasing to see Garry Crane in his first senior match after premature retirement. - Polly Farmer; The Australian.

We didn't deserve to win
I was disappointed with our performance, we didn't deserve to win. One consolation was that we played badly all day and still got within winning distance in the last quarter. Our ground kicking was very bad, just as it was when we lost to Richmond. Getting close enough to have a chance of winning in the last quarter speaks volumes for the determination of our players but we lacked initiative. - John Nicholls.
