Game Review

After failing against the fourth and sixth-placed teams, Carlton recovered brilliantly to easily beat St Kilda in this third ‘Sectional’, and in doing so, scored 100 points for the first time in a VFL match. Remarkably, this meant that the Blues retained second spot, and would play a Semi-Final against Essendon.

Carlton was back in flag contention, but could Worrall's team find their best form?

"On one occasion Marchbanks took a long shot for goal. The ball bounced wide on one side on one side of the posts, but the wind caught it as it rebounded with the impetus lessened, and literally blew it through the goal. There was an amusing incident at the close of the game, when Carlton's position was assured. (Joe) Hogan, who was playing his last game for St.Kilda -- to the great loss to the club and to football generally -- went forward to try to get a goal before he retired. Elliott, of Carlton, who was watching him, obligingly allowed his attention to wander, but Leeds, who had not grasped the position, called out, "Watch Hogan there," and rushed to spoil the mark, but found himself shouldered off by the absent-minded Elliott. There was much laughter on the ground and off when Hogan got his shot and missed." (Argus 05 September p7)
