Game Review

This was to be the last game of VFL/AFL football played at Princes Park. The Blues celebrated the occasion with a tear-jerking celebration of greats and their children before the game, a parade of its 16 premiership cups and a beautiful moment at the end between past great John Nicholls and current great Anthony Koutoufides. For more on the day's celebrations, click here, or for our Photo Gallery, click here.

The Blues couldn't match the mood for the first 3 quarters, making numerous skill errors but found their step in the last quarter, kicking 6 goals to nil, to minimise the damage to a more respectable 18 points. Melbourne, who were having an 'up' year in their up / down cycle, had too many midfield options and the most dangerous and effective forward on the field in Russell Robertson, who would kick 6 on Teague. He was always going to be dangerous on this day with their midfield supply too great to handle. The loss of ruckman Barnaby French in the first quarter did not help Carlton's cause and his loss would be felt for many weeks to come.

As a side-note, future Blue Brock McLean polled the 3 Brownlow Medal votes for Melbourne.
