Game Review

The game was won in the first quarter when the Blues kicking against the wind managed to finish the quarter all square with the visitors. The Blues then took full advantage of the breeze and kicked 7.9 to 2.2 to be 6 goals up at the long break. Carlton's solid backline coupled with the sides' pace and dominance in the the air proved to be too superior to Richmond. The Blues continued on their winning way during the third term to extend the lead to 40 points at the last break. The foot was taken off the pedal some what in the last term and the Tigers hit back, Blues should have won by a greater margin than 24 points.

For Whom the Bell Tolls...

"The Carlton-Richmond game on Saturday "ended" abruptly when a team of youngsters clambered on the roof of the press box and struck the old bell with a stick. Players and spectators assumed the siren had broken down, but field umpire Harry Beitzel was not easily deceived. He blew his whistle to halt play and ran to the fence in front of the time keepers' box. He was waved back, and restarted the game. Meanwhile, the unofficial time keepers had scampered away before they could be caught - probably well pleased with their effort. The siren sounded about two minutes later." (Age May 20)
