Game Review

The Blues-Tigers clash was a topsy-turvy affair as the injury-depleted Blues fought off a tenacious Richmond. Allan Edwards, Neville Roberts and Bruce Monteath, led the Tiger charge. The Tigers would have dropped out of the five if beaten and the Blues were without three key men in Southby, Jesaulenko and Kennedy. It was a tight and fierce contest all day and Richmond was embarrassed early by Carlton's pace and system. When Rod Ashman booted two goals near the five-minute mark in the second quarter it looked like the Blues would tear away, but the Tigers then added nine goals to two, thanks to the power of Neil Balme and the pace and strength of Roberts and Monteath. Mike Fitzpatrick then showed the sort of form that had made him the highest-priced recruit in Australia and David McKay and Peter Jones took control in the air as the Blues retreived the situation and drew level 14 minutes into the final term. The Tigers would valiantly hold on and win which enabled them to retain its spot in the five, sitting in fourth spot and Carlton was second. -Inside Football

In a game of mixed fortunes, these arch rivals figured in one of the three last quarter lead-changing games of the day, but it was the Tigers who finished in front at the final siren - by a mere three points. Early in the game Carlton opened up a 23 point lead and then midway through the third term it was Richmond's turn and they led by 22 points. The Blues came back and the lead changed several times in the last quarter. - Football Record.
