Injuries had taken its toll for Carlton, with Whitnall (shoulder) and Ratten (torn thumb ligaments) out for the rest of the season. However with the last placed Blues playing the number 15 side in St. Kilda there was some hope Carlton would provide some fight.

The Saints absolutely demolished Carlton in the opening quarter. The Blues looked insipid as St Kilda kicked 9 goals to 1. Carlton fans booed their team at quarter time.

The second quarter saw a huge reversal where the Blues kicked 9 goals while the Saints only managed 3. Craig Bradley was the main feeder to the Carlton forwards. Providing a strong target were Adrian Hickmott and Corey McKernan who each kicked 4 goals. The Blues were back in the game, 11 points down at half time.

They kicked the first goal of the third quarter to get within 6 points but the Saints responded with the next 2 goals to draw ahead. The Blues were wasteful, kicking 3 goals 6 to the Saints 4.2. McKernan fell awkwardly and injured his leg in this quarter and had limited effect from then on both in the ruck and up forward, allowing the Saints to take control. At 3 quarter time the Blues were 13 points down but the Saints powered home in the last, kicking 6 goals to 1 to run out 43 point winners.

Leading possession getters were Justin Murphy (28), Bradley (26) and Simon Fletcher (24). Ang Christou kept Riewoldt quiet.
