Carlton started well and led by 13 points late in the first quarter. A 50m penalty to the Demons started a run of 7 unanswered goals and a 39 point lead at half time. Carlton would have the bulk of the play in the second half but were let down by inaccurate kicking. They would have 22 shots at goal to 9. But 6.5 in the third quarter, followed by 4.7 in the last would not be enough to beat the more accurate Demons, who were able to make the most of their opportunities, kicking 6.3. Carlton would get as close as 1 point late in the final quarter but the Demons responded with a goal and ended up 6 point winners.
Among the best were Scott Camporeale with 33 possessions, Stephen Silvagni with 25, as did Matthew Lappin who also scored 2 goals, while Adrian Hickmott also kicked 2 goals from 24 possessions and 8 marks.
The loss would put Carlton out of the top 4, in 5th position.
