Game Review

Our first visit to Glenferrie was a happy one, with the Blues walking away with the win against the Mayblooms. Carlton would move back into 9th spot, but importantly would have a 1 game buffer over 10th, 2 wins buffer over 11th and 3 wins over last. Despite a disappointing year, the Blues wouldn't finish last - besides the Draft was decades away and there were no draft picks to fight for!

The weather was perfect, with the the wind favouring the grandstand end. Captain Ray Brew continued his winning ways, this being the twelfth out of thirteen tosses he had won. As a result the Blues kicked with the aid of the wind, with Harold Carter scoring the first behind. Hawthorn from the kick off then took the ball right down the field and goaled without the Blues touching the ball. Hedley Blackmore from a free kick scored the Blues' first major, and then Harvey Dunn was also freed, and scored the second goal. However, the home team out scored the Blues to lead by 5 points at quarter time. (2.4 - 3.3)
Hawthorn tended to play the man instead of the ball and Carlton were on the receiving end of many free kicks. Good play by Harry Bell got the ball to Percy Outram but he manged only a point. A fine run by Harold Carter resulted in a goal. Bill Koop's snap went through for the fourth goal and Harvey Dunn outplayed his opponent and scored the Blues fifth goal. The Blues, against the wind, had turned a 5 point deficit to a 10 point lead at half time. (5.9 - 4.5)
The Blues attacks were held up by the Hawthorn defenders. However, during this term Percy Outram and Harvey Dunn both scored majors. Hawthorn were kept goal less and the lead was increased to 24 points at the end of the third term. (7.12 - 4.6)
The home side hit back in the final quarter to reduce to the lead to 11 points, however they began to tire. HarveyDunn twice scored clever goals and this was followed by another from Percy Outram. Jack Cahill in his final game also scored a goal.
The Blues, having the addition of an extra rover took full advantage over the tiring Mayblooms and ran out winners by 28 points.

"Hawthorn showed no system, their passing was poor and individual players were constantly out of position, their half- backs often wandering across the centre-line."
(Trove; Australasian September 05, p39)

"For the winners none did better than Connell, who followed well, and gave a good display when on the half-forward lines. The backs gave a good display, Donoghue, Brew, Brewis and Morrissey all doing well. Carter was a very capable rover, and of the forwards Blackmore, Dunn, and Outram did best. Bell was of great value on the wing."
(Trove; The Age August 31, p15)

"Donoghue, as a defender, marked finely, and showed plenty of dash. Dunn's effectiveness is revealed in his goal getting. He keeps his man constantly on the move, without getting too far out of position. Blackmore was a capable half forward. Of the others, Irwin (particularly in the early stages), Carter, Connell, Bell, Outram, Brew, and Brewis did best."
(Trove; Argus August 31, p16)

At the end of this round Carlton were in 9th spot on the ladder with a percentage of 76.9.
