"Since Carlton and St. Kilda met last year great improvements have been effected at the St.Kilda Cricket Ground. The old bicycle track has been thrown into the embankment for spectators, which has been regraded, and affords a splendid view for some 40,000 persons. The whole of this embankment has been coated with from 4 to 6 inches of cinders, which has been broken up and rolled, thus forming a perfectly dry and smooth surface." (Herald June 26 p2)The curtain raiser was a match between the Carlton and St.Kilda baseball clubs.
Undefeated Carlton landed a big psychological blow on a likely finals opponent in this round, by crushing St Kilda with a dominant last quarter in front of a packed house at the Junction Oval. Boosted by the strength and experience of inclusions Jim Marchbank, Charlie Hammond, Norman Clark and Ernie Kelly, the Blues stuck with the home side until the last break, then unleashed a barrage of 5.1 to the Saints’ 1.1 to win by 31 points.
Clever goal-sneak Vin Gardiner kicked five goals for the visitors, and Frank Caine added two, in a percentage and confidence-boosting win. By coincidence, one of St Kilda’s best was ex-Blue champion Mick Grace. The wily veteran took some trademark big grabs and kicked four goals in a vintage performance for his third club.
This, and other results in the round saw the top four teams establish a clean break on the rest. Carlton was firmly entrenched on top of the ladder, one win ahead of Essendon, and four wins clear of St Kilda and South Melbourne. The versatility and effectiveness of Carlton’s attack was obvious in the list of leading goal-kickers by this stage of the season, with Vin Gardiner (16 goals) Frank Caine and Harvey Kelly (both 14) all in the top ten.
