Game Review

This was the first round for which the AFL Record, now a football institution was produced. The second edition reported that "The gate receipts at the Carlton-Geeiong match were £7 short of £200."

Numbers Worn

"To better enable the public to identify the players, numbers are afixed to the back of each jersey or guernsey in the alphabetical order of the names of the men. Red figures on blue and white jerseys of Geelong showed out clearly, but Carlton's numbers were even more distinct - white on a dark blue back ground.
Another feature this season is the appointment of stewards to closely watch for foul play. The public will applaud the action of the League in its determination to put down rough play and pugilistic exhibitions on the field."
(Geelong Advertiser April 29 p5)

"George Topping is not No. 13. yet he was the unlucky man at Carlton. He played beautiful football up to the third quarter, when he received an injury to his knee. Since Saturday he has been getting about on a crutch....Topping's injury will keep him out of Carlton's team for a week or two. Fluid has formed in the knee. Green will play in his place."
Topping was carried from the ground during the third quarter, however he did return to the field but he couldn't contribute, so the Blues were virtually playing with 17 men.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 2nd spot on the ladder with a percentage of 225.8.

Free Kicks 30 each.

"Carlton had 37 tries for goal, as against 18 by Geelong, and carried the ball over the centre line 31 times as against 28 by their opposition." (Age April 29 p11)
