Lindsay Smith was a high-leaping South Australian ruckman originally drafted by North Melbourne. He had previously played for Glenelg after being recruited from Bordertown, SA. After two years on their list, the Roos traded Lindsay to Carlton as part of the Corey McKernan / Mark Porter deal. He was a ruckman who just didn't have the bulk at 199cm and 91 kg to play the position permanently, but his leap was very special - if only he could have pulled them down!

Smith was called upon to make his Carlton debut in round 5, 2002 against his former club, after Matthew Allan was ruled out by injury. He had 17 hitouts, but just four disposals as the Blues lost by 19 points. He was sent back to the VFL the following week, and stayed there for most of the rest of a forgettable year for the Blues. Knee and coccyx injuries didn't help Smith's cause, although he was eventually recalled to the senior team for the final two games of the season. He managed just single figure disposals in both of those games, so it was no real surprise when he was not retained on Carlton's list for 2003. So twice in two years Denis Pagan had moved Smith on from the club that he was coaching.
