On September 22 1877 Carlton ventured to Geelong to play the Barwon club. Only 13 players of the selected squad arrived at the ground. The Blues were able to cobble together some players from the official travelling party. However they were still short of numbers. Barwon allowed Geelong player James Gardiner and Geelong Imperial player Jimmy Wilson to play.
Carlton lost the game 0 - 1.
Jimmy Wilson went on to captain the Geelong side a few years later.
