Recruited from Carlton's second twenty and made his debut in this match against West Melbourne.
"gave promise of better things yet to be achieved in the future by him."
Scored a goal (and his only goal for the season) in the Carlton vs West Melbourne match at the East Melbourne C. G.

Sutherland was named in the Second Twenty 21 man squad that played Geelong Juniors at Geelong.

James Sutherland's funeral; his remains were taken from his residence 310 Racecourse Rd. Newmarket to the Melbourne General Cemetery.

1926 June 11
The Herald (p4) announced Sutherland's death aged 70. The paper said Sutherland in his footballing days won the challenge drop kick competition with a kick of 68 yards, winning a silver cup.
