Living the dream. When childhood Bluebagger Emerson Woods was taken with pick No.38 in last year’s AFLW draft, it all became a reality. A VFLW premiership winner with Hawthorn at the age of 18, Woods will provide the Blues with elite speed. Often found on the wing, she will give Carlton a new dimension in the middle of the ground and thrives with ball in hand. Draft history: 2018 NAB AFLW Draft 4th round selection, No.38 overall.

Wilson, Woods share unforgettable debut
"Life-changing." "Amazing." “Surreal.” From the Eastern Ranges to Carlton. Charlotte Wilson and Emerson Woods won’t be forgetting the first time they pulled on the Navy Blue anytime soon. The former under-18 teammates both made their AFLW debuts in the most memorable of circumstances last night against arch-enemies Collingwood. And while things didn’t look great with five minutes remaining, they also managed to celebrate their first win, alongside fellow draftee Abbie McKay. Speaking post-match, it’s safe to say the 'unbelievable feeling' was mutual. “I can’t describe it, honestly. It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had,” Wilson said. “It was really awesome… It was a surreal feeling,” Woods said. As the Blues trailed by 10 points at the final change, Wilson and Woods may have started to think that their first games wouldn’t quite have the dream result. However, a late snap from Darcy Vescio - with thanks to a goal-line shepherd from Tayla Harris - meant they were able to sing the famous Lily of Laguna tune post-match. For Woods in particular, the scenes post-match had extra significance. “I’ve looked up to the Blues my whole life, following the boys my whole life,” Woods said. “I never thought this would be able to happen when I was young, to be honest it didn’t even cross my mind. “It was really amazing, I can’t believe I’m here. It couldn’t be better.” As Carlton celebrated its second win of the season and climbed to second of the Conference B ladder, Wilson said the “great vibes” post-match would live with her for a long time. Making it even more special was the support she had at Ikon Park on a scorching Melbourne night. “I’m so thankful and so honoured that I was able to be part of that, Wilson said. “It was incredible — family and friends came from everywhere to support. I had heaps of friends from school, it was really great for them to show up — there was huge support from the crowd.” With Woods’ last outing seeing her part of a VFL Women’s premiership, she said the feeling last night rivalled the Grand Final glory of five months ago. “It was very similar — the nerves were very similar and so was the end result” Woods said. “I was on the bench for the final goal. It was nail-biting.” - Cristian Filippo, Carlton Media

Blues confirm four AFLW list changes
The Carlton Football Club has informed Joanne Doonan, Emerson Woods, Katie Harrison and Sharnie Whiting that they will not be offered new contracts for next season. Doonan departs after one season at Ikon Park, where she played two games as an international rookie signing. Woods played one game for the Blues after being selected at pick No.38 in the 2018 NAB AFLW draft. The childhood blue achieved her lifelong dream in Round 5, 2019 when she pulled on the Navy Blue jumper in a win over Collingwood.
Whiting and Harrison also depart after one season. Despite not making an AFLW appearance, the pair were valued members of the playing group. Harrison was a rookie selection after making the brave decision to play Australian rules football after earning a place on the Australian Rugby Sevens side as a development player.
Carlton General Manager of Women’s Football Ash Brown thanked all four players for their commitment to the Club.
“On behalf of the entire playing group, coaches and players, we would like to thank Joanne, Emerson, Katie and Sharnie for their contributions to our club,” Brown said. “They turned up and worked hard whenever they walked through the doors at Ikon Park. In addition to that, they were great people to be around who positively influenced the culture of our program. “We thank them for their dedication to our AFLW program and wish them nothing but the best for the future.” – Carlton Media.
