Douglas Charles Smart was selected by Carlton in the inaugural National Draft in 1986 at pick 23, he was the Blues second pick overall. Smart never made it across the border and elected to play SANFL with North Adelaide from 1986 to 1989, Norwood in 1990 & 1992, and then at Sturt from 1994 to 1995. Smart did have a run with the Brisbane Bears reserves in 1991.
Smart debuted at 17 years old and played as a tall (6' 3 or 4) forward mostly at Centre half of Full Forward with occasional ruck work. His coach at the time (Michael Nunan) became frustrated with him because he could be a bit lazy having dominated as a junior in the College system (Prince Alfred College).
Sam Smart who played a single day game as well as the 1997 Night Premiership was the younger brother of Doug.
He did not manage a senior game for Carlton.
