W. A. Laver was born in Castlemaine, and recruited from North Melbourne in the VFA. He represented Carlton in a single game in season 1908 - a victory over Essendon at Princes Park by 11 points.

Four years later, Laver made a comeback to the VFL and played 7 games for Fitzroy, where he kicked his one and only career goal.

He passed away on the 16th November, 1922, at the tragically young age of 34.
