Wearing guernsey #29, Johnson played 7 games for Carlton after debuting in Navy Blue in Season 1912. He had previously played for Essendon between 1907 and 1908 where he had played 30 games and scored 4 goals, before moving up to Queensland. The Football Record noted of Johnson's first game: "W. Johnson's first game with Carlton was full of promise. He is a policeman, and his beat was about goal, which he protected well and earnestly".

Johnson was originally from Castlemaine, but also had a stint at West Melbourne VFA.

The Herald May 17 p3 1912 said William Johnson is a police constable.

Johnson passed away on the 5th October, 1964 aged 78.
