A local boy who played his junior footy at the ovals adjacent to Princes Park for the Princes Hill FC. Alan Hamilton was a classy on-baller who played in the back-to-back U/19's premierships (1978 & 1979), he also played one season of reserve grade football for the Blues in 1980. Due to a glut of small men and the Blues famed "mosquito fleet" of that era, his opportunities were very limited.

At the end of the 1980 season he was delisted and then spent the 1981 season playing in Queensland for Sandgate under ex North Melbourne premiership player Frank Gumbleton. In 1982, Alan Hamilton came back to Melbourne and played with VFA club Brunswick where he joined up with ex Blues U/19's premiership and reserves' team mates David Whillas, Stephen Buckley and Robert Lawson.
