2019 Pre-Season

The Blues pre-season commenced with a practice game against the Hawks, which we write up: HERE. The game was played at Ikon, and coincided with the latest AFL experiment of 'AFLX' which saw Patrick Cripps and Zac Fisher representing a composite team in a composite game at Marvel Stadium.

But then we would get in to the pre-season 'proper'.....:

Game Review

1st Quarter

Carlton 5/4/34 v Essendon 4/1/25

Carlton won the quarter with good and fast movement of the ball into the 50 metre arc – Walsh had four inside fifties, Murphy two, Setterfield two, along with Curnow one and one to Thomas. Just good to see the boys back themselves in and quickly kicking the ball to a contest. Murphy’s second inside fifty led to a opportunist goal to Dow and Setterfield hit up McGovern for a goal. Gibbons opened our account with two crumber’s goals.

On the down side Essendon moved the ball well for their four goals, we need to put pressure on their ball carriers. In the actual backline Weitering, Jones, Garlett, Newman won some clean contested ball.

Eight out of ten.

2nd Quarter

Carlton 7/6/48 v Essendon 4/5/29

A very different quarter to the first quarter, both teams manning up defensively all over the ground, made the quarter look more like an AFL game, which we have come accustomed to, after the free flowing first quarter. In defence Weitering was very strong, with two strong marks, Newman had fast hands and a quick kick out of defence – he looks like being a good addition to our team. Walsh was busy again and the older crew in Murphy and Simpson moved the ball well, also with the younger Petrevski-Seton again looking assured.

In the forward half Weitering passed to McGovern for a major. And Cripps from a ball up took the ball away and put one through the middle, two words applicable – Rolls Royce.

Shutdown pressure kept Essendon goal less. Newman, as mentioned, down back and Gibbons up forward are much needed older bodies, with good decision making.

Seven and half out of ten.

3rd Quarter

Carlton 12 / 10 / 82 v Essendon 8 /6 / 54

Early in the third quarter did Essendon looked disinterested or could only play as well as their opposition would allow them to play?

Our older bodies and the younger bodies seem to be embracing a style of play across the field. Murphy, Thomas and Simpson moved the ball well at times. Walsh, Dow and Setterfield did the same in open space. Is this mix going to see a better season ahead?

4th Quarter

Carlton 15 / 10 / 100 defeated Essendon 14 / 7 / 91

An old fashioned last quarter. A bit of spirit in the game. Nervous – are we going to win or lose? Go Blues!!

Hang in there!!!

Steadying goals to Cunningham and McKay. Keeping possession to steady the ship. We fall over the line in a game that in the end came close to a real hit out.

Overall .

Any win against the bitter rival is worthy. What can we take into the new Season? We seem to have added some mature bodies in that mid 20’s range with McGovern, Newman and Gibbons. Add Walsh who is beyond his years and Setterfield looks like a ten year player. Cunningham is a goal sneak.

Seven and a half out of ten. A good overall effort. We need to look at the quality of our Inside 50’s – hitting up a tall forward or a small target.

Go Blues!!!

Game Review

Blues fight until the end
Carlton have fallen just short of Collingwood in their final JLT Community Series game against Collingwood. The Blues showed plenty of spirit to fight back from a 21-point defecit halfway through the final term, to go down by just four points. Captain Patrick Cripps was again a force to be reckoned with in the midfield, collecting 24-disposals and also kicking two goals. Harry McKay was the other Blue on song in front of goals, with the young tall forward finishing with three goals for the afternoon.
Quarter-by-quarter:
Q1: With the aid of the breeze, Collingwood made the early running at Morwell. Carlton’s moment of the term came via David Cuningham, whose strong summer continued with a classy snap on the right boot to hit the scoreboard for the second straight week. Patrick Cripps led the way out of the middle as the Pies took a 10-point lead.
Q2: It didn’t take long for the Blues to reverse the tide, hitting the front thanks to early goals from Cuningham and Harry McKay. The play largely belonged to Carlton, but two late goals to the Pies saw them have the slight ascendancy at the main break. Cripps hit the scoreboard with two goals for the term, while Sam Walsh got going with his run-and-carry.
Q3: As the Pies pressed, Liam Jones stood up with aplomb to keep the Blues in the contest. After Collingwood threatened to take the game away from their opponents, Carlton stood up to force its way back into the contest. Luck was a fortune for Charlie Curnow on his way to kicking his first of the day, but late goals to Collingwood once again pushed the lead out to 21 points.
Q4: It was very much a case of what might have been for the Blues, who burst out of the blocks thanks to Harry McKay. The big forward kicked two goals within a minute, before a classy Will Setterfield snap and a Lachie Plowman set shot tied things up. After Collingwood retook the lead, Carlton had some late set shots to snatch victory, but Curnow and Sam Walsh couldn’t quite will them home.
Three things we learned:
1. Kade Simpson is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. The veteran showed all the resilience of a 307-gamer particularly in the final term, when he nearly willed the Blues over the line.
2. Carlton’s young midfield got a look at what it takes. With the likes of Beams, Pendlebury, Sidebottom and Treloar on the other side, the Blues backed their youngsters in the clinches against their senior opposition.
3. The Blues have some fight. On a number of occasions throughout the day, Collingwood threatened to kick away, only to be pegged back by Carlton. That was no more evident than the final term, when the Blues attacked in droves to nearly come away with a win.
Player of the match: Liam Jones stood up in defence, looking like he was back to his intercepting best. While Patrick Cripps was a typical bull around the stoppages, he recorded 12 intercept possessions and eight one-percenters to negate the threat of Mason Cox. - Cristian Filippo, Carlton Media
