1952 Summary

A season of close finishes for the club, with two draws, four losses less than one goal (including three 1 point losses) and two wins of 7 points or less.

Like 1951, Carlton had another poor start in 1952, winning only 2 of its first five games. Six consecutive wins between rounds 6 and 11 saw the Blues lying in 3rd place on the ladder only one game between the ladder leaders, Collingwood. The Blues had opportunities to extend this 6 game streak, but were held to two draws in rounds 12 and 14 (Melbourne and South Melbourne respectively), winning against North Melbourne in round 13, and having two one points losses in round 15 and 16 (against Fitzroy and Essendon).

After such close fought games, Carlton had comfortable wins in rounds 17 and 18, before losing heavily to eventual premiers Geelong in the last home and away round. After finishing in 4th place, the Blues met Fitzroy in the first Semi Final, losing by only 1 point despite having 28 scoring shots to 19 (Fitzroy 10.9 69 d Carlton 8.20 68).

This would be the first of only 3 times (1952, 1957 & 1959) that Carlton would play finals football in the 1950's.

Carlton Aims At 100,000

At Princes Park plans are being drawn up to expand the ground to accommodate up to 100,000 people when the stadium becomes the venue for the 1956 Olympics.

"Carlton Oval, which may now get the games, has held 62,000 people. Presumably it will be built up to take 100,000.
In this case, the Victorian Football League might as well transfer its finals from the MCG to Carlton Oval.
This would mean that thousands of Melbourne Cricket Club members who now get in for nothing to see the football finals, would have to pay to get into Carlton - all the profit of the VFL, which would fill the ground with cash customers, anyway." (News (Adelaide) 19 March 1952 p3)

"Carlton Football Club cannot use the M.C.C. while Carlton ground is being prepared for the 1956 Olympic Games."
