A brilliant Aboriginal footballer, Nicholls trained at Carlton in in the early 1930s but walked out when he was racially vilified. In 1932 he joined Fitzroy and became a star, representing Victoria in 1935. He became a respected leader of his people, and was knighted in 1972. Later, he served as Governor of South Australia.
