Game Review

Melbourne learned from their round 18 loss to the Blues, and changed their matchups for the Semi Final. They started the game with their star Jack Mueller one-out in the goal square, using their other fowards to keep the Carlton defenders out wide.

Melbourne opened with seven goals to two in the first quarter, and maintained the same lead up until the half-time break. The Blues came out hard in the third quarter, but only managed one goal, while Melbourne kicked three through Baggott, Mueller and Beames.

After throwing the team around at the last break, Carlton gave their all again, but three close misses didn't help the cause. Goals to McInnes, Gill and Mann gave some hope, but the run finished there. Melbourne kicked the next three through Mueller and Baggott, and the contest was over. Two late majors added further respectability for the Blues, but a 5-goal last term was never going to be enough.

One consolation for Carlton was the exceptional game of Bob Chitty, who kept Melbourne's Norm Smith under tight control for the first three quarters, before switching into the ruck at the last change and sparking the Blues' revival.
