"Bloomy" Bloomfield -a follower.

1879 Sam was playing for Essendon, the 1879 edition of The Footballer had this to say;
BLOOMFIELD, S - as captain of the Second Twenty, deserves promotion; gives every promise of becoming something out of the ordinary; good mark, kicks either foot, and fairly fast.

1887 The Australasian named Bloomfield as among the pick of the Victorian players as all rounders for the 1887 season.

1891 November 4

"At the Oaklands Hunt Club Cup race meeting at Caulfield last Tuesday the Oaklands Hunt Club Cup was won by Mr. S. R. Bloomfield's Rufus, who (was ridden by Mr. Willie Glasscock) had carried off the Hunters Trophy at the late Royal Agricultural Society's Show. Mr Bloomfield rode his horse in the race, his weight being 14st. 8lb. "Sam" Bloomfield, as he is familiarly called, was a notable football player a few seasons back, having captained the celebrated Carlton Football Club when they were top of the tree."

1893 Bloomfield played in an old players match this year and rumour spread that he was going to return and play for the Blues.
The Carlton Gazette supported this move, saying that his experience would be invaluable to the young Carlton team.

1909 February 05
PERSONAL
In acknowledging the Melbourne Stock Exchange expressions of sympathy with him in the serious accident which befell him while out duck shooting at Kerang and which had necessitated an operation for the removal of his right eye, Mr. S. R. Bloomfield telegraphed on Wednesday: - 'Many thanks to members for kind sympathy. Doing well as expected.'
Mr. Bloomfield is a well-known member of the Melbourne Stock Exchange, an owner of racehorses, and an old-time Carlton footballer."

1917 May 11
An advert. appears in the Kerang New Times for S. R. Bloomfield's horse stud property "Brookside" Kerang.

1925
Died October 07 at his country property in Kerang after a 12 month illness. Sam died just two days after the death of his brother. He had been a member of the Melbourne Stock Exchange since 1889 and a member of both the Williamstown and Moonee Valley racing clubs.

His brother "Tom" John Thomas Rothwell Bloomfield was a well known Essendon player, 1878 - 80, 1882.

"BLOOMFIELD - On the 8th of October, at Brookside, Kerang. Samuel Charles Rothwell, third son of the late John Rothwell and Hannah Bloomfield, loving father of Flo (Mrs. Broome) and Vera (Mrs. Birch), loved brother of the late T. R. and W. H. Bloomfield. Internment at Kerang 4pm. 10th. October."
